I have had the pleasure of being introduced to Dan Batchelor through the Dyslexia Association. I completely agree that spelling tests are pointless! I still feel hummilated by the spelling test where I got 2 out of 100 at age 11; I was diagnosed with dyslexia a year later.

I love he is getting the message out there that "Spelling tests aren't teaching, I don't think it's even assessment." They are useful for school data and thats it!

Lets make equitable education for all students! There is lots of talk about inclusion in schools, lets reconssider assessment methods to better support student learning and well-being.

Advocacy Against Spelling Tests

Dan argues that traditional spelling tests can be detrimental to students, especially those with learning difficulties like dyslexia. - Emphasis is placed on the pressure these tests place on students, which may not accurately reflect their understanding of language.

Dyslexia Awareness

The article highlights the importance of early diagnosis of dyslexia, which can significantly affect a child's educational experience.

Alternative Approaches

Dan suggests that schools should adopt more inclusive teaching methods that cater to diverse learning needs. Instead of focusing on rote memorization through spelling tests, the emphasis should be on understanding language and communication.
